Overview

Essentially, all life depends on soil. There can be no life without soil and no soil without life; they have evolved together (Charles E. Kellogg). The department offers a four-year Bachelor of Science honours degree in Soil Science with focus on soil formation, physics, chemistry, ecology and biology of soils. Undergraduates are equipped with requisite practical and theoretical skills which promote sustainable land use and agricultural practices as well as a springboard for further education at the postgraduate level. The program recognizes the dynamic nature of the environment and also addresses contemporary issues such as climate change in agriculture and the environment. Soil Science is vital to life!

Bachelor of Science Honours Soil Science

Programme Overview

Aim

The Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Soil Science equips students with adequate knowledge on current concepts in soil and environmental resources. The programme provides comprehensive and integrated training at the undergraduate level culminating in the production of an accomplished graduate of agricultural science. A bachelor’s degree in soil science offers varied career opportunities not only in agriculture but environmental sciences as well as land use reclamation.

Interesting study process

A degree in soil science is for someone who enjoys fieldwork and practical instruction, wants to spend time in labs and on the ground, and wants to learn a lot of theory through lectures and seminars on soil science, land reclamation, pedology, land reclamation, soil microbiology, soil chemistry, soil survey and methodology. In essence the degree in soil science prepares researchers, they frequently place focus on techniques and subjects that will be beneficial to later researchers.

Admission and application

Passes in any two of the following Advanced Level (GCE” A” Level) subjects: Geography, Environmental Science, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, Crop Science The applicant should have at least 5 ‘O’ level passes, including English language, and Mathematics with grade C or better.
